Yoshimatsu Nakata was Jack London's valet, first mate, and surrogate son.
A few years ago I found two of Nakata's diaries tucked away in the archives of UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library. It was a great find given Nakata's underexplored importance in London's life and his prominence in my book in progress about London and San Francisco Bay.

The Kagoshima University professors who adapted and translated three months of the diaries for my book--Takaharu Mori, Nagako Muto, and Kaoru Nishihara--continue to work with the diaries.
Together we champion Nakata and the role he played in London's life.
