To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Jack London's birth on January 12, 1876, I wrote an article about the boats London sailed on San Francisco Bay for Latitude 38, a Bay Area-based sailing magazine that has been going strong since 1977.
I love the Bay. It is the heart of the San Francisco Bay region. London, who was once one of the most popular writers in the world, had a formative, lifelong relationship with the Bay. And yet, previous biographers have not explored this vital bond. That is why I am writing a book about how the Bay, and its multicultural maritime community, shaped Jack London.
